The best WhatsApp desktop app in 2026: Kaption vs WhatsApp Desktop vs Volt vs ChatMate

A sourced comparison of WhatsApp desktop apps for Mac and Windows: multiple numbers, call recording, transcripts, translation, scheduling and AI assistants (MCP).

Kaption AIUpdated September 28, 2026

If you use WhatsApp for work, the official app on your computer starts to feel small quickly. It handles one number, it has almost no AI on the desktop, and you cannot record a call. A handful of third-party apps fill those gaps, each in a different way.

This comparison covers the four options people most often weigh against each other: Kaption, WhatsApp Desktop and WhatsApp Web, Volt and ChatMate Pro. Every claim below comes from each product's own website, help pages or app store listing, checked on 29 September 2026. We make Kaption, so we have tried to be especially careful where it does not come out ahead.

The short version

  • Several WhatsApp numbers in one app: Kaption and ChatMate Pro. WhatsApp's own apps and Volt handle one account at a time.
  • Call recording: only Kaption records WhatsApp calls, with a transcript of each side.
  • AI features: Kaption and Volt both transcribe and summarize voice notes. ChatMate Pro has none.
  • AI assistants (MCP): Kaption and Volt both connect to Claude and ChatGPT. Volt does it through its own cloud; Kaption offers a cloud connection or a local one.
  • Scheduling while your computer is off: Volt, through Volt Cloud.

WhatsApp Desktop and WhatsApp Web

The official apps are free, end-to-end encrypted and maintained by WhatsApp. The Mac and Windows apps handle voice and video calls, including group calls, and WhatsApp added calling to WhatsApp Web in 2026.

Their limits on a computer are specific. WhatsApp's help center says multiple accounts are currently only supported on mobile devices, so the desktop apps take one number. Voice-message transcripts are built for phones: on Android WhatsApp lists English, Portuguese, Spanish and Russian, and the Web and Mac help pages say the feature is only available on certain devices. Message translation is Android and iPhone only. There is no call recording and no scheduled messages.

Pick it if you use one number, rarely get voice notes and do not need recordings or AI.

Volt

Volt ("WhatsApp Superpowers") runs on Mac, Windows and as a Chrome extension. It focuses on productivity: voice-note transcripts and summaries, scheduled messages, and an MCP connection that lets Claude, ChatGPT and Codex read and send WhatsApp messages.

Two design choices set it apart. Volt's main pitch is that message content does not pass through its servers, but its MCP connection and its ability to send scheduled messages while your computer is off both run through Volt Cloud, a cloud connection linked with a QR code. And Volt's own FAQ says it supports one WhatsApp account at a time, with more planned, and that calls are disabled on Windows because of performance issues.

Pricing: a free tier with 30 minutes a month of transcripts and 30 of summaries plus 5 scheduled messages, Premium at $9.99 a month, and a Workspace plan for teams.

Pick it if you use one number and want scheduled messages that go out while your laptop is closed.

ChatMate Pro

ChatMate Pro for WhatsApp is a native Mac client with a separate iPad app. Its strength is accounts: it lets you sync as many WhatsApp accounts as you like, with a local archive, a lock screen and a stealth mode.

It does not try to be an AI tool. There are no transcripts, summaries, translation or assistant integrations, and there is no Windows version. It is sold as a subscription starting at $0.99 a month.

Pick it if you want a lightweight Mac client for several accounts and do not need AI or Windows.

Kaption

Kaption for Mac and Windows runs WhatsApp Web inside its own app and builds in everything the Kaption browser extension does, with no Chrome needed. What it adds on the desktop:

  • Several WhatsApp numbers, each in its own isolated session, with App Lock (Touch ID or a password on a Mac, a password on Windows), native notifications and automatic updates.
  • Call recording. WhatsApp voice and video calls are recorded as audio, saved to Downloads, and each side is transcribed separately so the transcript shows who said what. See how to record WhatsApp calls on Mac and Windows.
  • Voice-note transcripts, summaries and live translation. On a Mac with macOS 26, transcription and translation can run on the computer itself.
  • Scheduled messages, reminders and snooze.
  • AI assistants through MCP. Switch on Local MCP or Cloud MCP in Settings to let Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or another MCP client search your chats, summarize conversations and set reminders. It cannot send a message immediately; it can schedule one you ask for. The full setup is in how to connect WhatsApp to Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor.

Where it is behind: the Windows app is an early beta, there is no Intel Mac or Linux version, and on Windows, call transcripts run in Kaption Cloud rather than on the computer. Some features depend on your Kaption plan.

Pick it if you run several numbers, want calls recorded and transcribed, or want your AI assistant to work with your WhatsApp.

How to choose

Start with the number question, because it rules out half the list. If you need two or more WhatsApp numbers on one computer, your choices are Kaption and ChatMate Pro. Then ask whether you want AI: ChatMate has none, Kaption has transcripts, translation, summaries, recording and MCP.

If you use one number, the choice is between the official app, Volt and Kaption. The official app is enough if you do not need anything beyond messaging and calls. Volt is the better fit if scheduled messages must send while your computer is off. Kaption is the one to choose if you want calls recorded or prefer AI assistants connected without routing through a vendor cloud (its local MCP option).

FAQ

Can WhatsApp Desktop use two numbers at once?

No. WhatsApp says multiple accounts are currently only supported on mobile devices. On a computer, Kaption and ChatMate Pro can hold several numbers in one app.

Is Kaption a replacement for WhatsApp?

No. Kaption runs WhatsApp Web inside its own app and adds tools on top. You sign in by scanning a QR code with WhatsApp on your phone, exactly as with WhatsApp Web. Kaption is not affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta.

What is the best Volt alternative for WhatsApp?

If you need more than one number or want to record calls, Kaption covers both and also connects to AI assistants through MCP. If you only need a multi-account Mac client without AI, ChatMate Pro is the other option.

What is the best ChatMate alternative?

If you want several accounts plus AI features, or a Windows version, Kaption is the closest match. ChatMate Pro remains the lighter choice if you only need a native Mac client.

Does any WhatsApp desktop app record calls?

Of the four compared here, only Kaption records WhatsApp calls. The others rely on a separate screen or audio recorder.
